About Me

Kendra Nelson

Tell us a little about yourself!

What is your full name, and what name do you prefer to go by? How do pronounce it phonetically?

Kendra Nelson, I prefer to go by Kendra. Pronounced: "Kee - make up a sound here - n- d - make up another sound"... haha just kidding. It's pronounced how it sounds: "Ken - dra"

Which pronouns to do you prefer? (e.g. she/her/hers, he/him/his, they/them/their)

She/hers/her

What is your birthday? Are you OK with having your birthday publicly acknowledged/celebrated?

November 8, 2000. Of course!

Where did you grow up?

Rochester, MN, home of the Mayo Clinic in Southeastern MN. I don't know what a normal downtown and/or hospital looks like

Did you have any fun nicknames while growing up? Do you have any now? What is the origin (if you feel comfortable sharing)?

My softball team called me "Kenny", while my coaches called my "Nelly", so that got a little confusing as I was running around the bases. I do not have a nickname now

What holidays do you celebrate (if any)?

I celebrate Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving. My favorite is probably Thanksgiving because I really like food. (Or maybe it's because I am hungry right now...)

Academics

What is your academic life like?

What year in school are you?

I am a sophomore!

When do you expect to graduate?

May or Fall 2023

What is your major? How did you choose that?

Electrical Engineering! I really like physics, especially relating to electricity and circuits! I am also a firm believer that everything is actually a wave, so it's my personal quest to prove that is true.

Do you know what you'd like to do after you graduate?

So many things! Probably work on circuit design for medical devices or audio systems. Stay tuned, this will probably change once again in the coming months!

Interests

What do you like to do when you're not in class/working for STS?

What do you like to do for fun?

I love to run and be outside. I love to sea kayak on big lakes. I recently got into playing electric guitar (I am a sucker for 80's rock) which is pretty fun as well. Hanging with friends is another favorite thing of mine!

Do you have any hobbies or groups that you participate in?

I participate in robotics, where we are building a robot that will be controlled from a remote computer... hopefully we can get it working! Like I said above, I like to pick up musical instruments and go outside

Do you have any other jobs or internships?

I just got a co-op with Sub-Zero here in Madison as a Control Design Intern and am very excited to start that!

Any exciting plans for summer/winter break?

This summer I am goint to stay in Madison and work and hopefully travel on the weekends to explore Madison and the surrounding area!

Neat Facts

What are some interesting, unexpected, or surprising facts about yourself?

What is something that might surprise someone who just met you?

I play the accordion (however I don't bring it with me to college because it is the loudest instrument on the planet)

Where is somewhere you have always wanted to travel?

I really want to travel to Argentina and explore basically the entire country

Have you ever met anyone famous?

I was in the front row at a Scotty McCreery concert (the love of my life when I was 12, there is still a small part of me that thinks we are going to get married) and he made eye contact with me for 3 seconds. I will never forget it.

Life at STS

Talk a little bit about your time with STS

What is your favorite topic to teach?

TBD. I love to learn things and teach things; we will figure that out!

What is something you are interested in learning?

I am interested in learning Python, because it seems like a super useful programming language

What has been the most challenging part of working at STS?

Again, TBD, I have been working here for about 2 weeks, so I'll keep you posted
