{"id":1190,"date":"2026-08-28T14:28:59","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T19:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sts.doit.wisc.edu\/training-materials\/?post_type=trainer_guide&#038;p=1190"},"modified":"2026-09-02T14:58:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T19:58:16","slug":"ds120-project-1-balance-illustrator","status":"publish","type":"trainer_guide","link":"https:\/\/sts.doit.wisc.edu\/training-materials\/trainer_guide\/ds120-project-1-balance-illustrator\/","title":{"rendered":"DS120: Project 1 (Balance Illustrator)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<section class=\"wp-block-sts-block-sts-custom-sections\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>FORMAT:<\/strong> Workshop + Help Session<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For these sessions, STS trainers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Deliver a small Illustrator demo (template) to get students familiar with the basic tools necessary for the first <mark>DS120<\/mark> project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help students properly set-up their first Illustrator project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serve as onsite helpers the rest of the class time<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-sts-block-sts-custom-sections\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About DS120 and the Balance Project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Partnership Context<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every Fall, STS is requested to attend nine DS120 sections twice a semester to act as onsite support while students complete individual projects using Illustrator or Photoshop. Trainers first deliver a regular workshop at the beginning of each session and use the rest of the time to help students 1-on-1. As students are working on their projects, STS trainers are expected to go around the room to answer any questions and to check-in with students even when no questions are apparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project 1: Balance (Illustrator)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first project DS120 students are expected to create is a two-part process, however STS only assists with the digital component. Students will come to the STS Help Session having created a symmetrical piece consisting of hand-cut and pasted shapes. workspace. To be sure all panels are consistent with what the learners will see, <strong>reset<\/strong> your workspace.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-sts-block-sts-custom-sections\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Session Expectations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below is an outline of how trainers should generally approach each session. Make sure to practice this flow at least once in its entirety <em>before <\/em>your scheduled workshop to ensure the flow of the workshop the day of goes smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sts-important wp-block-paragraph\">Adobe updates their softwares REGULARLY. Because of this, it is especially important to go through this workshop <strong>in its entirety<\/strong> (practice as if you are delivering to an audience) to ensure all tools are in the same location you are used to and to learn if there are more efficient ways to do a task with the new updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>STS Intro<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Introduce yourself to the TA to let them know you are the STS trainer ready to assist with software questions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure students have Illustrator installed!\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If not, take the first 10-15 minutes of class to go over 1-on-1 with students how to install: <a href=\"https:\/\/sts.doit.wisc.edu\/resources\/adobe-cc-access-on-campus\/\">Adobe CC Access For Eligible Students<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go through the STS Workshop Slideshow for DS120: Project 1 (Balance Illustrator):\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Give the STS Intro<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have students Sign-In<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have students download class file (Illustrator template)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go over the Land Acknowledgement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recall to students their lecture on Illustrator that focused more on the mental model of how to use the program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide an overview of the topics to be covered today and what students will be working on (example of the Balance project): Recreating all the cut-up shapes in Illustrator!\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mention: if anyone ALREADY knows illustrator, that they can begin on their project right away and do NOT have to follow along<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Open The DS120 Illustrator Practice Template<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Double click on the downloaded <\/strong><strong><em>DS120 Illustrator Practice Template<\/em><\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explain: this is a template created to practice some of the tools necessary for the Asymmetrical (digital) part of the Balance project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mention: if students prefer to go through the template on their own, they can follow written instructions. Otherwise, we will go over each section in real time.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Overview of Illustrator Interface<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mention: the default workplace is \u201cGetting Started\u201d\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explain what workplaces are<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show how to reset workspace in case things move around<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Introduce the various panels<\/strong> we see right away as a recap from the earlier lecture\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Artboards<\/strong>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explain that this is where all of our work lives!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tools Panel<\/strong>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We will only be using the 4 most common tools for this workshop<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A white triangle means there are more tools if you hold down your click<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Properties Panel<\/strong> (the most helpful panel!)\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mention that contents within this panel changes depending on what you are selected on<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If selected on the document itself, this is where you can add Rulers, Grids, Guidelines<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Layers<\/strong>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is a reference of how graphics are stacked within our project!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notice there are layers and sublayers. A sublayer is automatically created when you make something on the artboard. A layer needs to be manually added from the Layers Panel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show how to hide and lock layers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain the <strong>Windows<\/strong> menu item in case students don\u2019t see an existing panel or need to bring up another panel\/window<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Go Through the Different Artboards<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This part is fun! Just go through each of the artboards and follow along with the written instructions\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Remind students who prefer to read on their own can go at their own pace! Otherwise, students can follow along with you<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As much as possible, relate what students practice making to their Balance project (i.e. maybe your Balance project has a crescent shape &#8212; to make this, we can use the Shape Builder Tool)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After going through each artboard, make sure to offer time for questions!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Set-Up New Illustrator Project<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Let students know they will create a new project based on the class assignment guidelines. We will be importing this to our project as a reference for recreating them digitally using the Illustrator Tools.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to <strong>File &gt; Place\u2026<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tell students to locate their scanned image. Let\u2019s crop it out using a Clipping Mask!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Briefly mention what a Clipping Mask Does<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a rectangle (with any Fill Color, no stroke) that is 6x10in and move it to be aligned with the left artboard. Double check size of rectangle from the Properties Panel!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highlight both the rectangle and the image below it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Properties Panel &gt; Make Clipping Mask<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"386\" src=\"https:\/\/sts.doit.wisc.edu\/training-materials\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/clipping-mask-2.gif\" alt=\"gif showing the process of how to apply a clipping mask\" class=\"wp-image-1234\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"10\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create Page Border and Lock Layers!\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eventually everyone will be printing out the right artboard with the asymmetrical work. Let\u2019s create a thin border around it so when we print it out, it will be easier to cut to the perfect dimensions and paste onto our final project board.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drag a 6x10in rectangle (no fill, black stroke of .25) on the right artboard. Move\/resize as necessary &#8211; double check and\/or edit size from the Properties Panel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the Layers Panel\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lock the only layer &#8211; explain this will help keeps things in place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create New Layer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remind students to make sure they are on the new layer to create objects. It\u2019s they\u2019re choice. Drop-Ins at Office Hours are preferable but 1-on-1 appointments can also be made &#8211; they just may take longer to connect them with a trainer. Tell students that the rest of the time is work time!
